What is Rasa Yoga? Created by Dover Yoga studio owner Carrie Tyler, Rasa Yoga is a style of yoga which focuses on weaving one of the nine major rasas, or “juices” that sustain our life, through an entire flowing yoga class. Rasa Theory comes from two ancient yogic texts the Natyashastra and the Locana. The nine rasas this class explores are: shringara: love, vibhatsa: dissatisfaction, shanta: peace, vira:strength, bhayanaka: fear, hasya: joy, raudra: anger, karuna: sadness, & adbhuta: wonder. Rasa classes always begin with yogic philosophy discussion of one of the rasas & may weave discussion, chanting, pranayama, meditation and cleansing kriyas into asana flows that are grounded in the chakra system. The classes are light heated and body expanding, students often remark that these often laughter filled classes are complete in nature and leave the body expanded and the mind grounded.
Mornings: We will spend our mornings deeply exploring the seven major chakra energy centers which are the backbone of Rasa Yoga. Topics covered will include asana flows. symbolism and psychology of each chakra in art and history, meditation, and practical application.
Afternoons: Rasa Theory, its roots in Bharata’s Natyashastra (an ancient doctrine on the arts in India) and its implications in Indian art and culture. Time will be devoted to deeply explore the meaning of the nine rasa and the structuring of rasa yoga classes and how to apply rasa theory to your teaching.
About Star Island
We are truly honored
this year to be able to offer this training on Star Island. Located one hour
off the coast of Portsmouth, NH this beautiful island currently functions as
conference center. Part of the charm of the island is its true New England
feel! Accommodations are simple and showers are every couple of days, and
the food is spectacular, but we cannot accommodate any dietary restrictions
(though vegetarian is always offered)! There is no better place to get in
center ourselves and deepen our practice as teachers.
